Where is the Rand going?

Money is a fascinating topic. We all want more. Most of us have no real idea what it is, other than a happy bank balance or a pile of paper animals in our wallet.

Last week I learned more about the Rand than I really thought I wanted to know. A simple example: Why does the value of the Rand fluctuate against other currencies. (The answer is NOT what you learned in Economics 101.) Another example: Where is the Rand really headed? And how fast will it get there?

If you’re involved with imports or exports, no matter how tangentially, it’s pretty useful knowing this stuff. And if you’re planning to earn your million and then fly out of the country on the last balloon, then it really does make sense to know how many Aussie kangaroos, Canadian salmon, UK puddles, or New Zealand icicles your Rand will buy in years hence.

Our northern neighbour, those with whom we conduct silent diplomacy that works in strange and as yet unknown ways, is an abject case of why it is useful to understand a little about the macro-economy. 100,000% inflation, fortunately tempered with free and fair elections, would be a good reason not to be earning Zimbabwean dollarettes right now.

Back to the subject at hand: Money. Grab a frostie and settle in for an entertaining, graphical read. For once, it is not the government’s fault! Check out Rand Expose – the Fundamental Truth here.

This week’s PetesWeekly is short, like the week. And since I am moving today, time to stop writing and go find a cardboard box to lug about.
