I took my daughter to the local library on Saturday. It’s one of the best in Norway. I asked to see all the books they have on setting up a firm in Norway. I now have all those books piled on my desk. All five of them.
They have more Nelson Mandela biographies than they have books about starting a new venture.
The librarian was rather firm when she said, “No one wants to do that. The government will look after you if you do not have a job.” I felt almost guilty for asking. I had found the same thing in England.
Contrast this with the vooma in each South African. We aspire to business ownership. Bookshops are loaded with books to teach you how to go out and take charge. Maybe this is because the govt will not look after you.
Until now much of our vooma went untapped. Making inroads offshore meant changing countries. That’s not true now.
You have as much access to the Web as you need from your desk in Alice, Eastern Cape. You don’t need a passport or visa. That’s because you don’t need to leave home. You can exploit your knowledge, skills and vooma to set up an online income in dollars. Living in one country no longer frees you from bondage to your local economy.
The Web does not care if you work from Alice, Eastern Cape; Alice Springs; or Alice, Texas. Nor do your prospects and clients. Your reach encompasses the whole English speaking world. All without leaving home.
I like to work with folk I can get to know. These past 15 years my client base has numbered below 1000. It is a lot easier to find 1000 clients amongst 1 billion English speaking people than it is to find them in the Eastern Cape.
With $1 = R12.50 your hourly rate is cheap globally. Your website sells anywhere. Skype reaches any phone at low cost and gives you a local number in dozens of countries. Teamviewer lets you supply tech support worldwide for next to nothing. Without leaving Alice.
You are not limited to selling just hours. I raise them because we South Africans tend to have a vast breadth of experience rather than tightly focused into some niche. That gives us a birds-eye view of issues that many “specialists” lack.
There is no risk in building this extra income, no local exposure. The web begs us to do this because so many people fear it. You do not even have to leave your day job.
Ignore the stories of new online businesses worth more than IBM after just six months. I see the money flowing behind the noise. There is enough to keep each of us in droe wors and Delheim for as long as we live, no matter which Alice we choose to live in.
